Top sheet
The top sheet is a protective covering that helps keep the shape of the absorbent core, while providing a soft, comfortable barrier between the product and the user’s body. Usually made from a nonwoven material, the top sheet provides maximum comfort while preventing rewet (the process of fluids returning from the core) and keeping the area dry.
Backsheet
The backsheet serves as a protective barrier between the absorbent core and anything that comes in contact with the outside of the product. The back sheet ensures that the fluids remain inside the absorbent core while protecting beds, furniture and other objects that come in contact with the product. Back sheets are usually made from polyethylene (plastic) or a nonwoven composite material that provides a nicer, clothlike texture. The Cloth-Like Backsheet, or CLB, has the added effect of breathable sides, i.e. air passed freely through the sides of the product.
Standing Leg Gatherers
Standing Leg Gatherers, or SLG’s, serve to prevent fluids from escaping from the product before the absorbent core can complete absorption. SLG’s hug the lower extremities of the user, preventing the fluids from running out of the product while in the standing position. (Optional)
Acquisition / Distribution Layer
The acquisition / distribution layer, or ADL, is commonly offered in products intended for rapid, high-volume absorption, e.g. adult incontinence briefs. The ADL improves the movement of fluids into the absorbent core, and aids in their distribution throughout the pad. (Optional)
